When most people think of Social Security, they think of the retirement program: Pay into it for the forty years or so you’re in the workforce, and you’re guaranteed a certain level of income at retirement. Oliver believed that problems attendant on disability should not be regarded exclusively as the responsibility of the medical profession and other similar ‘experts’ who, from a position of power, see the problem as entirely located within the individual.

The best definition appears in the Standard Rules on the Equalization of Opportunities for persons with Disabilities 1993… the term… encompasses a wide variety of functional limitations linked to physical, intellectual or sensory impairment, medical conditions or mental illness, whether permanent or transitory”.

People afflicted with diseases known to be chronic and long-lasting may want to consider filing for disability benefits, especially if the symptoms of the disease make it difficult for the person to execute the required daily duties of his or her profession.

The refusal to acknowledge that disablement or impairment is not just limited to those very obviously disabled but is a ‘normal condition of all humanity’ is clearly the reason for the historical oppression and exclusion of ostensibly impaired people by the majority of so-called normal people.

Saying to the Social Security Administration that you have “shortness of breath” is not as significant as presenting records from your doctor that you have shortness of breath when you stand for over 15 minutes at a time and shortness of breathe can be triggered by walking across a room.
